Good subtitles are crucial for the viewer’s enjoyment of any content they watch. Low translation quality can cause increased usage drop-off and hurt content viewership for audience of target language. a good translation is one that retains “all meaning from [the] source and reads fluently;” A bad translation is one that bears no resemblance to the meaning of the original and is “disconnected from the context in the video;” A loose translation is one that uses paraphrasing, colloquialism, idiom, or “contains some contextual information not available in [the] source text.” It requires a sound knowledge of the source language, fluency in the target one, as well as technical skills combined with high-level knowledge of the language of films. It is only with the combination of these elements that it becomes possible to give life to a high-quality subtitled product, which corresponds to subtitles written in a simple, adequate way, easily understood by the audience, true to the spirit of the creators’ intent, displayed in synchrony with the video, and for a period of time sufficient for reading the text.
